The castle consists of two parts: the Upper Castle, which was built between 1096 and 1116; and the Lower Castle, which was built between 1156 and 1173. The Upper Castle is surrounded by a wall with seven towers, while the Lower Castle has five towers. The interior of both castles are decorated with marble, stucco and carved stone.

The History of Hohenschwangau Castle

Hohenschwangau Castle is a royal residence in the German state of Bavaria. It is located in the Hohenschwangau district of Bad Reichenhall, about 10 kilometres south-west of the town of Füssen. The castle is open to the public for tours and contains a number of palaces, gardens and statuary, as well as a park with deer and a waterfall.

The site was first mentioned in a document from 1119, when it was owned by Archbishop Hartmann von Dillingen. In 1210, King Philip II Augustus of Germany awarded the ownership of Hohenschwangau to Count Palatine Rudolf I of Wittelsbach. Rudolf commissioned the first major building project on the site, a castle chapel, which was completed in 1220. The original castle consisted of three large round towers and was surrounded by a moat. In 1253, King Rudolph I added two small towers to the east side of the main keep. In 1346, King Ludwig VI added two more towers to the west side of the main keep.
