Fethiye is a city in Mugla Province, Turkey. It is situated between the Orontes River and the Gulf of Fethiye. The city has a population of 171,553 as of 2012. Fethiye has always been an important commercial center due to its location at the crossroads of several trade routes. The city was founded by an Indo-Greek king, Menander I in 300 BC. It changed hands several times during conflicts between Byzantines and Arabs before becoming part of the Seljuk Empire in 1055 AD. The Seljuks were overthrown by the Ottoman Turks in 1517 AD. Fethiye remained under Ottoman rule until it was captured by French forces in 1768 AD during the Franco-Turkish War (1768-1774).
